True Life: I have an addiction to Social Networking

By Christine Brown, Intern

Okay, I admit it. I have an addiction; an addiction to social media. I usually joke about things like this because I am never without my phone, but I need to be serious. I have a problem. I started to realize this when I started my internship. I needed to let the social networks that I am a part of know what was occurring in my life.  First, I went on Facebook to edit my profile. I changed my location, updated my work information, and wrote a status about starting my internship. Then, I switched over to Twitter and tweeted about the different emotions going through my head. I proceeded to tumble over to Tumblr and write a quick post about my thoughts and feelings. If anyone wants to know about my whereabouts, just check one of those social networking sites and you will be sure to find me.

I am the kind of person who does not read the handbook or guidelines when starting something new and the same goes for my interaction with these social networking sites. I get into the “nitty gritty” of it all and learn as I go. The newest addiction of them all is Tout. Now, I have heard this word before and decided to look up the definition. According to dictionary.com tout is a verb that means “attempt to sell (something), typically by pestering people in an aggressive or bold manner.” Oh okay then. So essentially with this new type of social media I’m going to be pestering someone. This does not skew far from others. I looked at the website and it was graced with Shaquille “Shaq” O’Neil’s smiling face. He always seems to be on the cutting edge of social media first with Twitter and now with Tout. Where would the world be without celebrity endorsements, but I digress. Shaq decided to break the hearts of all of his fans by announcing his retirement last Wednesday through Twitter by using Tout. Tout is a site and app that bridges the gap between YouTube, Facebook and Twitter. In an introductory video made by Tout, they say “record, share, save.” That sounds easy. Instead of using words, individuals can make a short video clip either on their computer or phone and then upload it to the social networking site. From that point they have the option to upload it to Facebook, Twitter and email it to others. It will also be on your Tout account so everyone can see it instantly. Do not worry, there is already an iPhone app available and a Droid app is in the making. Hurry out there and download the application because then you too can share in the memories with a click of a button.
