Web 2.0 is the Most Popular Wikipedia Entry

AdAge reports that the buzzword coined by O’Reilly Media, “Web 2.0,” is the most cited Wikipedia entry of 2006. My bet is because not many know what it means.

• Wikipedia definition, Web 2.0: Second generation of Internet-based services—such as social networking sites, wikis, communication tools, and blogs—that emphasize online collaboration and sharing among users.

Just two weeks ago, I was on Wikipedia searching this term for a presentation that I did for my peers on the same subject. I also cited the entry in my resulting PowerPoint and now in this blog and the entry before this one, thus adding to the popularity of the search term.

Other Wikipedia entries in the site’s top ten cited list were: Steve Irwin, the Mark Foley scandal, blog, AJAX, Snakes on a Plane, meme, wiki and RSS. Notice that most of these terms are technical or vague, thus the need for a Wikipedia explanation in the first place and the need to cite definitions when discussing the topics further.
