To The Coffee Runners
By Giles Taylor, Intern (@gilescatherine)
Immediately after my graduation ceremony, people began to ask, “So, what are you going to do now?” With an air of, “you probably have nothing lined up” in their voices, but I always enthusiastically responded, “I have an internship at a PR firm in New York City!” The next exchange would consist of some combination of the words, “So, basically you’ll just be getting coffee all day.” It is quite exhilarating to be able to tell all of these people they were wrong!
Up until this week I was having a hard time explaining what it really was that a PR professional did. Finally, through the help of my first two weeks at Fusion, I have a real understanding of what working at a PR firm really means. I truly feel as if I have landed in the right spot, the people here at Fusion not only want me to learn but they are willing to help.
I have continued to produce editorial calendars for current clients and worked on last minute briefing documents. Surprising to me at first, Bennie always invites me into briefings so I can start to hear how to interact with clients and the media. I was absolutely ecstatic earlier this week when I was invited to a media training session with a new client, however a few briefing documents trumped that and I was called to my intern duties. Although I missed the meeting, it was still reassuring to know that I am in a place where I actually am invited to these meetings and not just ignored.
So, for all of you coffee runners out there, keep your head up high, these real learning experiences do actually exist.
