Check Yourself Before You Wreck Yourself
By Bennie Sham, Internship Program Lead (@beesham)
Over the past few years, I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing past, current and future interns for our program. It’s great to speak with so many different students and hear about their career goals, accomplishments, experiences, etc.
For the most part, students I’ve spoken with have come prepared to the interview. They’re eager, knowledgeable and they care to learn (or seems to). There have been some students that were not as prepared as they should have been, and that amazes me still. No matter what company and what position, there are always the basic steps that you have to take before going to an interview. It seems that many college students still forget that or they just don’t care enough.
There are some basics that I cannot stress enough:
- Research the company
- Have questions prepared
- Sound eager
- Dress appropriately
- Don’t be late
- Don’t forget the Thank You notes/emails
On a lighter note, I found a comic from The Oatmeal, which lists The Top 10 Crappy Interviewees. It’s a fun read and is probably be more memorable than my stern-sounding list. If you have your own to-dos and not-to-dos, please feel free to share!
